Isla de Margarita in the Caribbean

Isla de Margarita is the largest of Venezuela's islands, lying 38km north of the mainland. Despite being a popular tourist destination, much of the island remains unspoilt and there are two National Parks. For its small area (934kmē), Margarita has a variety of habitats with semi-desert, mangrove swamps and cloud forest in the mountains. Fishing is the main industry after tourism.

EL YAQUE

Windsurfing destinations don't come much better than El Yaque on the south coast of Margarita; cross-shore tradewinds that blow every day, warm water and a choice of windsurfing centres along the beach, all with stacks of good kit. We had our best windsurfing holiday ever, so thanks to all the guys at Club Margarita.

KITE SURFING

El Yaque is also good for kite surfing and an ideal place to learn, with shallow water and designated areas away from the windsurfers. We had lessons with Sky Riders.
